Growing up in Kagawa, in the Japanese countryside, Masanori Morikawa’s punk-rock aesthetic began developing in his childhood, influenced by his grandfather’s skilled embroidery on leather jackets for the local bike gangs. Morikawa went on to study in London, where he worked under Charles Anastase before forming his own label. Masanori Morikawa launched the Christian Dada fashion label in 2010, basing the brand in Tokyo, Japan. The band is characterized by its dark sensibility and gothic elements, aiming to develop a strong identity over simple garments, whilst deploying couture-like techniques. The brand name is a respectful riff on Christian Dior, and the artistic anarchy of Dadaism. Morikawa sees Dadaism as an artistic philosophy that embraces imperfections and the rejects societal norms, reason and logic.
