Mahaut Rey
Mahaut Rey (b. 1996, Paris) develops a practice at the intersection of painting, writing, and digital creation. A graduate of ENSAV La Cambre (2023), her work investigates the place of the body within hybrid spaces — at the threshold between physical and virtual worlds.
Rooted in autobiographical research linked to disability and queer identity, she stages figures navigating dematerialized environments. These symbolic landscapes borrow as much from video game aesthetics as from mythological and medieval imaginaries.
Digital media extends her pictorial and theoretical inquiry: the artificial colours and sculptural volumes explored in her painting series unfold through interactive devices programmed in Python and performances with avatars created in Unreal Engine. Through these liminal spaces, Rey seeks to affirm the material presence of the body and to propose alternative modes of connection and emancipation.
Her work has been presented in solo exhibitions at Ojalá and La Corvée, entered the Fonds d’Art Contemporain – Paris Collections in 2025, and was shown at Art Basel Paris.
