Tobie Giddio: Nightlight Series

On 26 April 2019, artist Tobie Giddio took up residency in the SHOWstudio space to create a large-scale fashion illustration live. The broadcast showcased Giddio’s creative process from start to finish, documenting her as she painted the walls and floor of the studio cove with ink. For this work Giddio utilised a unique set of tools, comprising of large Japanese brushes, mops and feather dusters.

Tobie Giddio contextualises her live performance at SHOWstudio: "The energy and spirit of Nick Knight's works over the years permeate the space of SHOWstudio. I realized this soon into the process and decided not to play music as I normally do in my own studio. I chose to quietly work off of what was inherently ‘there'. Explosive and expansive qualities were so palpable. I became conscious of what was present, years of consistent expansion, innovation with a genuine worship of beauty and the feminine principle.

The space itself is a former chapel. Gorgeous natural light shifts and pours in from above. Nick’s iconic images intermittently placed throughout the space. The team entirely focused on capturing and recording the process with total precision while juggling all their other various projects in play. It is indeed a bustling yet serene creative sanctuary. I felt absolutely privileged to have been given this pure white environment with complete and total freedom and encouragement to go for it with my mop, feather dusters, traditional Chinese calligraphy brushes and a lot of ink. The 'Nightlight' girls that came through encompass the polarities of light and dark harmoniously and ease-fully. Meditative stillness and flow. The collision of power and beauty."
